Update report on the Haram Issue and women's prayer area in Makkah

Assalamu Alaikum,
Thank you for your support in the campaign to retrieve women's right to pray in sahn mataf al-Kaaba (circumambulation area around the Kaaba) that was suggested by a Saudi official panel in 25th Aug 2006, to be removed. After less than a month of writing campaign and with the support of muslim women across the world lead by the Washington based organization of: Muslimah Writers Alliance (MWA) directed by Ms Aisha Schwartz who launched a singing petition entitled: 'The Muslimah Writers Alliance Grand Mosque Equal Access for Women Project and online petition' to be sent to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. In less than eleven days of collecting signatures which reached about 2000 signatures shared by women and men from all over the world, the presidency of the two Holy Mosques announced on 11th Sep 2006 that they were misunderstood and that the original area will not be moved but another two areas will be added to it. Fair enough.
I would like to congratulate us all, and ask you to move your efforts to help in gaining more right in the Makkah Haram itself. We do not want the women's area to be a mini prison space surrounded by a metal or cement barrier to block our view of Kaaba or to separate us unnecessarily from the rest of prayers. A decent mark to show where the women's area is situated is the civilized way for us to pray in serenity and in calmness.
The second effort should be moved to Madina Mosque. An equal access to its premises especially the Rawdah al-Sharifah and to visit the Prophet in decency facing the area is a denied right that has been going on for some years now without opposition. Women's visit to the Prophet and to pray in the few meters square area of the Rawda is limited to few hours a day (the most inconvenient, after Fajr and after noon prayer), whereas the rest of Rawda and the whole area of the Prophet's tomb is accessible to men all day.
We shall ask also for the removal of the barriers between the women and men sections to enable women to see the end of men's raws. Apparently, women's prayer in the actual fashion is not considered as Jama'a prayer and is equal to her praying at home, and should repeat her prayer.
The silence and individual opposition to the arrangement in Madina has let the authorities to increase its rules to demote our rights in praying in the holiest areas. Recently a new arrangement has been added to divide women who are waiting to enter the Haram for Ziara according to their nationalities, separating Saudis aside, and other nationalities from certain doors, calling for them is similar to calling on goods in a flee market.
Next week my article in al-Iqtisadia will be dedicated to this issue. Other writers will participate in this campaign as well supported by the evidence we are collecting regarding the old and new arrangements there.

تقرير حول نتائج الحملة الخاصة بمصلى النساء في الحرم المكي
الأخوات والأخوة،
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله،
أبشكركن/كم بأن الحملة التي سارت بتوفيق من الله لإلغاء اقتراح لجنة الحرمين بإلغاء مصلى النساء من صحن مطاف الحرم، والتي اقترحت ذلك في 25 أغسطس 2006، قد تراجعت عن اقتراحها في أقل من شهر. وأعلن الرئيس العام لرئاسة الحرمين الشيخ الخزيم أن الاقتراح فهم خطأ وأن مصلى النساء في صحن المطاف لن يتغير ولكن سوف تضاف إليه منطقتين أخريتين، وذلك في مؤتمره الصحفي الذي نشر في وسائل الإعلام في 11 سبتمبر 2006. وقد كان لحملة الكتابة والحملة الصحفية المحلية والدولية التي تناولت هذه القضية أثر كبير في نجاح الحملة، فضلا ًعن الحملة الإسلامية التي تبنتها "رابطة الكاتبات المسلمات" من واشنطن والتي ترأسها السيدة عائشة شوارتز، فقد قامت الرابطة بتدشين حملة توقيعات عالمية لترفع إلى خادم الحرمين الشريفين، وقد تمكنت في خلال 11 يوماً من بدئها بذلك من جمع ألفي توقيع، وشارك في هذه الحملة نساء ورجال من كافة أنحاء العالم.
فهنيئاً لنا جميعاً بهذا النجاح، وندعو الله أن يوفقنا إلى تحقيق مزيد من المكاسب لصالح المرأة المسلمة. وأرى أننا ينبغي أن نستفيد من الفرجة التي فتحت للحصول على حقوقنا كاملة في الحرم المكي أولاً، بأن توسع منطقة مصلى المطاف وأن ترفع عن حدودها الحواجز التي تحيل المكان إلى شبه سجن وتحجز الرؤية عن الكعبة المشرفة على الرغم من القرب القائم منها. ونقترح أن تُعلّم المنطقة بشكل بسيط من خط في الأرض أو ما شابه بحيث لا يؤثر على سلامة النساء وعلى على روحانية المكان والموقف.
ويلي الحرم المكي، الحرم المدني، الذي نطالب بأن نحصل على حقوقنا فيه مثل الرجل تماماً. فالمرأة محظور عليها الزيارة أو الصلاة في الروضة الشريفة إلا في ساعات محدودة من النهار (في أكثر الأوقات غير ملاءمة، بعد الفجر بساعة وبعد الظهر بساعة) فضلاً عن تحديد النساء بمساحة محدودة من الروضة تجعلهن في صراع مع الوقت ومع النفس والزائرات ومع المرشدات اللاتي لا يحترمن عبادة النساء، في حين أن الروضة والزيارة مفتوحة للرجال طيلة النهار.
وقد أدى السكوت العام أو الاعتراض الفردي على هذا التمييز في الحرم المدني إلى أن يبدأ نظام جديد من التمييز بين الزائرات وفق الجنسية وعلى هذا الأساس يدخلن من هذا الباب أو ذاك، في شكل لا يمكن أن يُدعى بالحضاري أبداً.
كما نطالب بأن ترفع السواتر والحواجز التي تفصل بين النساء والرجال في الحرم المدني والتي تعيق مشاهدة النساء لآخر صفوف الرجال المأمومين مما يجعل صلاتهن غير مقبولة كما يعرف الفقهاء. وقد حدث التمادي في هذا الفصل في السنوات الأخيرة والذي لم يكن معروفاً لا في زمن الرسول ولا عبر التاريخ الإسلامي وحتى عقدين من الزمان مضيا.
سوف أقوم بالكتابة في هذا الموضوع بالتفصيل في الأسبوع القادم إن شاء الله، كما سوف تشارك فيه مجموعة من الكاتبات السعوديات. ولكن/لكم الخيار في دعم هذه الحملة بالشكل الذي ترونه مناسباً.
