انتهاك جديد لحرية التعبير في السعودية اعتقال الكاتبة " وجيهة الحويدر " القاهرة في 6 أغسطس 2006 أدانت الشبكة العربية لمعلومات حقوق الإنسان اليوم اعتقال الكاتبة السعودية "وجيهة الحويدر" أثناء سيرها على الجسر الذي يربط بين السعودية والبحرين وهي ترفع لافته مدون عليها"أعطوا المرأة حقوقها". ويأتي القبض على وجيهة الحويدر كحلقة ضمن سلسلة من الانتهاكات الجائرة التي تعرضت لها ، بدأت بحرمانها من الكتابة في وسائل الإعلام السعودية بناء على قرار وزارة الإعلام في عام 2003 ، ثم حجب المواقع الإليكترونية التي تكتب بها مثل الحوار المتمدن وشفاف الشرق الأوسط ، وأخيرا القبض عليها أمس الأول الجمعة 4 أغسطس ، بسبب إصرارها على ممارسة حقها في التعبير عن رأيها . وفضلا عن انتهاك حرية الرأي والتعبير الذي تعرضت له الحويدر ، فإن إلقاء القبض عليها يمثل خرقا واضحا لاتفاقية " القضاء على جميع أشكال التمييز ضد المرأة" التي صدقت عليها السعودية . وجدير بالذكر أن الحويدر قد فازت بجائزة رابطة الكتاب العالمية و تم تكريمها في عام 2004 في هولندا نظرا لكتابتها التنويرية لاسيما الناقدة للتيارات الدينية المتشددة ودفاعها عن حقوق المرأة في السعودية والخليج. والشبكة العربية لمعلومات حقوق الإنسان وهي تدين هذا الإجراء المتعسف ، فهي تطالب الحكومة السعودية بالإفراج الفوري عن وجيهة الحويدر وإلغاء قرار حرمانها من الكتابة في وسائل الإعلام السعودية الذي ينافي مبادئ حقوق الإنسان وحرية الرأي والتعبير.

A new violation to freedom of expression in Saudi Arabia
Wajiha Al-Howaider arrested

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (HRinfo) condemned today the arrest of the Saudi writer Wajiha Al-Howaider while she was walking on the bridge connecting Saudi Arabia with Bahrain holding a banner that stated "Give women their rights".

Her arrest is only one of many violations that she has faced, starting with banning her from writing in any Saudi press in accordance with the decree passed by the ministry of information in 2003. Her writings on websites have been blocked. Ms. Al-Howaider writes for websites such as Modern Discussion (www.rezgar.com) and Middle East Transparent (www.metransparent.com). Finally, she was arrested on Friday, 4 August, simply because she insisted to practice her right to express her opinion.

Besides the fact that Al-Howaider's right to freedom of expression has been violated, arresting her is considered to be a violation of the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women, which Saudi Arabia has ratified.

It is worth mentioning that Al-Howaider has won the prize of the International Writers Association and was honored in 2004 in Holland for her enlightening writings that are critical of extremist religious trends and that defend women's rights in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf.

HRinfo condemns her arbitrary arrest and demands the Saudi government to immediately release Wajiha Al-Howaider and cancel the decree that bans her from writing in Saudi press as this decree is a contradiction of human rights principles and the right to freedom of expression.
